GRAND KNIGHT’S

REPORT

Dear Brother Knights,

A New Year is upon us - we have much to be thankful for, especially the gift of life.  We also  have much to hope and pray for.  Presidential elections are just 10 months away.  We have a lot to learn about various candidates of all parties.  Who will be best for America?  I hope, and pray, that brother knights will study the candidates and vote for the best for America.

We have had a successful 2011.  We just hope and pray for an equally successful 2012.  As one of our Grand Knights once said... "Its time to get Crabby."  We hope for success for our Crab Feed (Jan. 28) and all our events this year. We support more charities each year and our charity program depends on our success.

The council is thankful for a membership of  about 115 and we need all of you men to stand up and help for our continued success.  If some of you new members don't know what you can do, just call an officer listed on page 2.

I can't close without saying thanks and congratulations to our Knight of the Year and Family of the Year for 2011-2012 who were named at the Christmas Dinner on Dec. 10th.  The Knight of the Year is Mike Appling  and Family of the Year is The Bob and Irene Weisend family.

Happy New Year to you and all knights and families of St. Pius X Council 12656.

Peace !

Jim Krieger, GK

K C'S STILL HEALING   HAITI'S KIDS

REMEMBER THE QUAKE IN HAITI?  It all happened on January 10, 2010. The 7.0 quake totally devastated Haiti and more than 2000 children underwent amputations as a result of injury.  The Supreme Council established a program to provide all Haitian children with prosthetic limbs and therapy training to use them.  Log on to the Internet and type in You can also get information on "How to donate." Videos show kids learning to play soccer again.  Their enthusiasm is hard to believe. A league was also formed  of teams of child amputees.  This is a worthwhile program for donations, by both individuals and council.

LARGO CAVALIERI di COLOMBO

In recognition of work done for the people of Rome by the K of C The City of Rome, on December 6, broke ground on a new plaza, named after and dedicated to the Knights of Columbus.  It is called Largo Cavalieri di Colombo or Largo (square) Cavalieri (knights) Colombo (Columbus). In English it means:  Square of the Knights of Columbus.  Get it?  Cool !

That evening the Gospel Choir of St. Thomas More Church in Washington D.C. sang in concert in honor of the groundbreaking, bringing Rome a rare chance to experience American Gospel Music. (pictures on www.kofc.org)

PRAY FOR THE SICK AND DISTRESSED

Our Blessed Mother is probably the best example of how people should conduct their prayer life.  Every time Holy Mary has appeared to someone, with the Lord's approval, She has constantly reminded that prayer is essential.  And she asks that people pray more and pray for others like: the poor and the downtrodden and for the people in The Middle East.  Our Mother's prayers always include prayers for the souls in Purgatory.  I am sure she wants us to pray for them too.       <><>

DID YOU EVER WONDER...

...how Catholic traditions came about.?  We're not talking about teaching from Church traditions.  In this case, we're talking about some of the Christian traditions about how to act or comport oneself while observing one's faith .  You know: folding your hands to pray, genuflecting, striking one's breast, etcetera.

Let's see... folding our hands to pray - either with fingers interlocked or palms facing, is a gesture from the age of Feudalism when people took an oath of allegiance to the will of the local lord.  We place our hands together within the hands of our Lord as a sign of our subjection & dependence on the will of Our Lord.

Striking the Breast as we are called to do again in the new Penitential Act of the mass - it is a sign of sorrow for sin, the root of which is thought to be in the heart.  This was a gesture among ancient people and is found in                                                                                                                                                 Scripture parable of the publican (Luke 18:13).  It was also used as and expression of guilt by witnesses to Jesus' crucifixion (Luke 23:48).

(Other gestures will be explained later)

INSULTS CAN BE UNIQUE

NO ONE LIKES TO BE INSULTED.  AT THE  LEAST IT IS A DISAGREABLE EXPERIENCE.  AT THE MOST IT CAN BE A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE.  AT ONE TIME INSULTS WERE FOLLOWED BY A CHALLENGE TO A DUEL,  THAT WAS OUTLAWED DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION.

HERE ARE A SERIES OF INSULTS THAT HAVE  BEEN RECORDED IN TIME BY REPORTS OF THOSE WHO  WITNESSED THE INSULTS OR BY NEWS MEDIA.. TODAY THEY ARE MEANT FOR AMUSEMEN, ,NOT FOR AN EXCUSE TO TREAT SOMEONE  MEAN  IN RESPONSE.

These glorious insults are from an era before the English language got boiled down to 4-letter words.

> A member of Parliament to DISRAELI:

"Sir you will either die on the gallows or from some unspeakable disease."

> "That depends, Sir," said DISRAELI, "whether I embrace your policies or your mistress."

> "I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure." CLARENCE DARROW -

> "I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a  letter saying I approved of it." MARK TWAIN

> "He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends." - OSCAR WILDE

> "I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; bring a friend, if you have one." - GEORGE BERNARD SHAW to WINSTON CHURCHIL

>"Cannot possibly attend the first night, will attend the second night... if there is one."  - WINSTON CHURCHILL... in response.

> "I feel so miserable without you; it's almost like having you here." - STEPHEN BISHOP

> "He is a self-made-man... and worships his creator." - JOHN BRIGHT- Actor-humorist

>  "He is simply a shiver looking for a spine to run up." - PAUL KEATING

> "In order to avoid being called a flirt, she always yielded easily."- COUNT TALLYRAND.

> "His mother should have thrown him away and kept the stork."  -MAE WEST

> "Some cause happiness wherever they go, others, whenever they go." - OSCAR WILDE

> "I've had a perfectly wonderful evening, but this wasn't it." - GROUCHO MARX

Past Grand Knight’s Corner

Catholic teaching emphasizes the importance of the family,  and has always supported the family as the basic structure of human society; in private life, in society and in the law.  We grow up learning we should support the family in every way we can.

When our beloved country was formed -- the  leaders wrote and approved our Declaration and Constitution.  In those foundational documents  the founders were determined to follow precepts of what is often called the Natural Law.  The natural law, is based not only on what we call The Ten Commandments, but also for the Public Good.  They made one big mistake. They knew it was a mistake, allowing slavery, but hoped for correction later.  It was finally corrected by A. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, done by executive order on Jan 1, 1863

Our 40th president, Ronald Reagan, always  promoted what he believed was the for the Public Good.  I believe he did it according to the Natural law and what was best for all U.S. residents,  therefore in the public good..

Here are some quotes from President Reagan:

"The family has always been the cornerstone of American society.  Our families nurture, preserve, and pass on to each succeeding generation the values we share and cherish; values that are the foundation for our freedoms.  In the family we learn our first lessons of God and man, love and discipline, rights and responsibilities, human dignity and human frailty."

"Within the covers of the Bible are all the answers to all the problems men face."

"If we ever forget that we are One Nation  Under God, then we will be a nation gone under"

"Without God, democracy will not and cannot long endure."

"We have the duty to protect the life of the unborn child."

"One way to make sure  crime  doesn't  pay would be to let the government run it."

"There are no easy answers, but there are simple answers.  We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right." (emphasis added)

Liturgical Seasons

Q What are the official seasons of the Church?

A. The Official Liturgical year begins with the Advent season.  Other seasons follow.

The Advent Season begins on the fourth Sunday before December 25th. It can also be described as the Sunday nearest Nov. 30.  In 2011 that Sunday occurred on Nov. 27th.  Next year it will be on Dec. 2nd.  Advent means the coming or arrival.  In the Church it is a season to prepare for and anticipate the birth of Christ. The colors of vestment during advent are Violet and Rose.  Advent ends Christmas eve.

The second season of the liturgical calendar is the Christmas Season beginning Dec. 25th and ending  on The Baptism of the Lord on Jan. 9th.  The major celebration of Christmas is from Dec. 25 until  Epiphany on Jan. 6. The color of vestments is White.

Following the Christmas Season is a season called Ordinary Time during which the major feast celebrated is the mass itself.  Liturgical Colors are

Green.   This season of Ordinary Time lasts until the day before Ash Wednesday, a movable feast.

The next season of the liturgy is the Lenten Season.  Starting on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 22 in 2012) and lasting 40 days not counting Sundays until Holy Saturday (April 7th in 2012).  A season of repentance, fast and abstinence; the word lent is Teutonic  and means "to fast."  The color is Violet.

The season after Lent is the Easter Season.  It begins on vigil of Easter Sunday (April 8 in 2011) and  continues until Pentecost.  The colors are Gold or White except for Pentecost Sunday when the color is Red.

Again, after Pentecost, the Church resumes a season called Ordinary Time, when the Liturgical Color returns to Green.  The Ordinary Times Season continues until the next Advent Season the following November or December.

The second in the series from Fr. John Kerns about studying the bible.  The first was in the Navigator of Sept/Oct, 2009 and was entitled: How Do I Start?  (More to follow.)

CATHOLIC BIBLE / PROTESTANT BIBLE?

The question is often asked: What the difference between a Catholic bible and a Protestant bible.  The "Catholic" Bible contains 73 books while the "Protestant" Bible has 66.  There are the same 27 books in either New Testament (the Christian Scriptures) while, all originally written in Greek.  The difference is in the collection of Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) which refer to the writings before the time of Christ from the Jewish Tradition.

It has to do with the canon or collection of books which would make up the Hebrew Scriptures. Since the Christian Scriptures (NT).  were written in Greek, those authors used for their reference a Greek version of the Old Testament called the Septuagint (meaning LXX or 70).  This name refers to the legend that seventy translators worked to provide a Greek translation of the scriptures to Jews who lived in Greek speaking lands and had lost sufficient ability to speak or read in Hebrew.  The Septuagint contains the books of the Catholic version of the bible.  It must be remembered that communities of Christians (or Jews for that matter) used different collections of books for the bible.  It was centuries before the final cannon was decided upon.

Later, when Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, went to translate the bible into German in 1534, he chose to use, for the Hebrew Scriptures, the collection used by the Jews of his day (in Hebrew) that did not include some of the books in the Septuagint (Greek) canon.  Those extra books are referred to by the Protestants as the "Apocrypha."  They are Judith, Tobit I & II, Maccabbes, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus (Sirach), Baruch, and parts of Esther and parts of Daniel.

Therefore, when choosing a bible for personal prayer and study I recommend  choosing a Catholic bible. The New American Bible (NAB) is the translation we hear from at mass.  The Revised Standard Version (RSV) is most commonly used for academic study, say at Mount Angel Seminary.  (continued)

The "New" Revised Standard Version (NRSV) is the

RSV that makes better use of inclusive language (e.g., "... I will make you fish for people" as opposed to ... "I will make you fishers of men."), which I prefer.  Just make sure it says "Catholic Version" on the bible.

The important thing is if you don't have a bible, get a bible -- and read it!  Even a few verses a day can make your life change for the better.

PROTECT LIFE

Any of you knights interested in protecting life of the unborn might consider organizing such activities  for the council or at least informing the council when they occur.  That's another type of activity which Supreme now requires to qualify for the Star Council Award.  We need a Life Activities Director.  Let's talk about it.

Did you order one?   More people did than last year.  The latest word is that 51 families or more have taken advantage of the K C offer to provide a custom selected tree for their home.  Many people have also paid the knights to  installed the tree in their home.  This has been a boon to many unhandy people.    Jack Kanalz
